The purpose of this role is to contribute to the design, development, and implementation of
automation systems that address customer challenges, enhance operational efficiency, and comply with regulatory and safety standards. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is instrumental in ensuring robust, innovative designs that push technological boundaries while supporting project delivery, from conceptualization through commissioning and testing.
Key responsibilities:
- Working as part of a multi-discipline team to specify, design, implement and test specialist robotic applications
- Produce mechanical design drawings and bills of materials using Solidworks® CAD package
- Identify high-risk and safety-critical areas of designs. Carry out calculations, proof of concept and testing as required to de-risk
- Regular communication with others involved in the design and development process
- Manage procurement of mechanical design from a global supply network
- Adhere to design schedules and maintain agreed product attributes
- Support sales and applications teams in offering robust solutions to customers, including new and novel concepts
- Participate in design risk assessments to BS EN 12100-2010 and ensure designs meet regulatory guidelines and machinery safety legislation
The requirements of the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role:
Essential:
- Several years of hands-on experience in the detailed design of machinery of laboratory equipment
- Extensive experience using the SolidWorks® CAD software package for design tasks
- Familiarity with 6-axis robots and associated tooling for automation solutions
- Understanding of machinery regulations and awareness of health and safety considerations in machinery design
- Knowledge or experience with pneumatic systems and their integration
- Ability to perform effectively under tight deadlines and high-pressure situations
- Adaptable working methods and a collaborative approach to being part of a dynamic team
- Experience working within environments governed by well-documented QA systems
Desirable:
- Understanding of systems designed for managing and moving components efficiently
- Familiarity with servo motors and/or stepper motors, particularly in applications involving precision-driven mechanisms
- Experience designing or working with modular systems for scalable and flexible solutions.
- Ability to perform basic calculations to validate and support design decisions
- A self-motivated professional who thrives with minimal supervision
- Previous involvement in prototyping, experimentation, or concept validation activities
- Experience in procurement processes and collaborating with external suppliers to achieve project objectives
